HAPPY FAMILIES (with reading)

Mr and Mrs Rabbit and the little rabbits

have funny habits.

Mr and Mrs Dog do gym and jog.

Mr and Mrs Parrot favour grated carrot

while the Foxes and their cubs love social clubs.

I’ve nothing: against these happy families

with their all too human flaws; their unspoken laws;

their passionate resolutions

their hypocritical, unwritten constitutions;

their printed circuits, the banks of silicon chips;

their amateur theatrics, the melodramatic scripts;

their encyclopedias of trivia,

the repertoires of tragedy and farce;

the step by step manuals of firm enculturation;

the seemingly eager cast.

Nor their publically declared intentions;

their desperate face-saving interventions;

the accepted disparity,

the protested solidarity;

the genetic compulsions,

the frenetic revulsions;

the tensions and abstentions,

the aspirations, the deprivations,

the laughter, the hurt surrender

and after, the return, with interest, to sender;

the ‘go for broke´;

the hidden imperative behind the joke;

the affiliation; the duty;

the degradation; the beauty…

No, I’ve nothing against the general family ‘deal’

that a little gentle escapology won’t heal.
